There are 2 main types of activities listed on the ISMC brochure above. The first one is Trips/Events, which is useful for making friends with either Canadian participants or other fellow international students.
The second section is the Activities, that are useful for practicing English. When it says "Free ESL" and it doesn't fall on a Sunday, this is an ESL discussion class, which is non-religious. Usually a short story is read together and questions are asked to measure your comprehension. You may also discuss something else with the ESL teacher. When it says "ESL Bible Study", it means that it focuses on understanding Bible and is a great opportunity for you to participate with other international students in asking questions about Bible, or English language.
I would highly recommend you to attend any of the above listed groups/churches. As an international student, you will have a great opportunity to practice English in the following ways. Firstly: You will practice singing in English worship songs. No one can hear you, as all people sing together - there is no need to be shy, just practice! Secondly: You will practice listening to lecture by local pastor. This is actually similar to a university lecture and you can take down notes to see how much information you can retain. Thirdly: If you attend the ESL class after church service, you will get to speak in English by asking questions either about the topic in church, or the specific words you would like to know the meaning of.
In summary: You don't need to be a Christian to attend church; No one will push you to believe what Christians believe (this is not a cult); You may make friends that happen to be very good people; ISMC is partnered with local churches to bring free ESL to international students.
If you would like to attend any of the events/activities, you should call the contact phone number listed under activity. Hope this helps you learn English for free!
